Starting again
Why your first workout back should feel too easy.
The goal of returning is to create a second successful session—not to prove that time away changed nothing.
Your memory and your current capacity are different things
You may remember the weights, pace, or volume you used before the interruption. That history is useful, but it is not an instruction to reproduce the old session immediately.
The first workout back is a calibration. It tells you how familiar movements feel now and how you recover afterward.
Finish with unanswered capacity
Choose a level that allows controlled repetitions and leaves a clear margin before failure. Keep the session short enough that you can evaluate it the next day instead of simply surviving it.
- Prefer familiar movement patterns.
- Avoid personal-record attempts.
- Use the next-day response as part of the assessment.
- Progress from evidence rather than impatience.
Easy is not the destination
Starting conservatively does not mean training without progression. It means earning the next increase through repeatable sessions rather than front-loading the entire comeback into one day.
